Interview met webshop eigenaresse Denise Ubbink

Denise is 18, maar kan niet gaan studeren, zoals al haar vriendinnen. Of Denise daarom zielig is? “Absoluut niet! “(haar eigen woorden). Deze week opende ze haar webshop, iets wat ze eigenlijk altijd al wilde doen. Haar doel? De Nederlandse ASOS worden.

Vertel eens wat over jezelf...
“Nou ik ben dus Denise, ik ben achttien jaar en woon met mijn ouders en zus Nicole (22) in Hoek van Holland. Ik ben al meer dan twee jaar samen met mijn vriend Marco (23). Ik hou natuurlijk van shoppen en Gossip Girl, maar ook van mooie auto’s en Top Gear.”

En waarom ga jij niet gewoon naar school?
“Twee jaar geleden werd bij mij een hersentumor geconstateerd. Geen levensbedreigende, maar hij mocht ook niet verder groeien, want dat zou zeer ernstige gevolgen hebben. Ik was net klaar met het VMBO en was begonnen in Havo 4. Ondanks het feit dat ik niet geopereerd hoefde te worden en ook geen chemotherapie hoefde te ondergaan, veranderde mijn leven enorm. Ik moest (en moet nog steeds) medicijnen slikken waardoor ik erg veel last kreeg van enorme hoofdpijn aanvallen, een beetje te vergelijken met migraine.”

En toen?
“Ik kon dus erg weinig doen, wist nooit wanneer zo’n aanval zou komen. Het kon komen na een stressvolle dag als ik van tevoren al wist dat ik een slecht cijfer haalde, maar ook na een superleuke dag met vriendinnen, waarop ik gewoon eigenlijk net iets te veel energie verbruikt had. Soms kwam ik dagenlang het huis niet uit, omdat het gewoon niet ging. Havo 4 was dus geen succes en ik ben na de zomervakantie dan ook niet meer teruggegaan.”

En nu, een jaar later, ben je een webshop gestart! Altijd van gedroomd, of gewoon een spontaan idee?
“Ja! Mijn ouders hebben verschillende kledingoutlets, dus ik ben er wel een beetje mee opgegroeid. Ik weet al heel lang dat ik ook zoiets wil en ik kan me op dit moment eigenlijk geen leukere baan bedenken.”

Leuk...
“Ja echt, ik heb deze zomer aardig wat reisjes gemaakt. Naar Londen en Parijs en Duitsland en het resultaat staat nu allemaal online. Oh en in de woonkamer. Want dat is nu nog eventjes mijn kantoor/magazijn. De foto’s voor de webshop heb ik gemaakt met een vriendin in een hotel. Ik als model, stylist en visagist, zij als haarstylist en fotografe, zo leuk! Eigenlijk is alles tot nu toe alleen maar leuk. Maar het leukste vind ik toch wel de reacties van iedereen die de kleding ziet.”

En nu?
“Nu wil ik graag de Nederlandse ASOS worden. Of nou ja, de ASOS van vroeger dan, toen het nog iets goedkoper was. Ik wil me graag onderscheiden door alles écht goedkoop aan te bieden. Dikke vette winst maken hoeft van mij nu nog eventjes niet. Ik zag bijvoorbeeld dat een bekende Nederlandse webshop met jurkjes, een jurkje dat ik voor 36,95 in mijn shop heb liggen, voor 64 euro op hun webshop hebben staan. Dat vond ik best grappig om te zien.”
